In 1271, a merchant from Venice went on a twenty-three year journey. He travelled thousands of miles through Persia, across the Gobi Desert and over the mountains of Tibet to China. His name was Marco Polo and he was the first European traveller in these places. He stayed there for many years and helped Kubla Khan.
